Meet Your Surgeon

Dr. Joel Benowitz is a board certified surgeon who has established himself as a leader in his field of breast and general surgery. He is Director of Surgery at Long Beach Hospital Medical Center, where he is the physician in charge of the breast outpatient clinic. He maintains staff privileges at St. Francis Hospital, North Shore Hospital and South Nassau Community Hospital, providing convenient access for patient services close to home.

Dr. Benowitz maintains contact with leaders in the field of surgery through his active participation in many respected medical societies and through his dedication to continuing education. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons; Kings County Surgical Society; Nassau County Surgical Society and New York State Surgery Society. He serves as an adjunct clinical assistant professor at the Department of Surgery at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM) and at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), and also provides a comprehensive surgical teaching program for the students and interns at Long Beach Medical Center.

Dr. Benowitz was Professional of the Year at the '09 Long Beach Chamber of Commerce and Castle Connolly’s Best Surgeon on L.I. Dr. Benowitz maintains a comprehensive private  surgical practice for his patients to achieve his commitment to confirming a diagnosis and resolving patient problems with the least invasive treatment plan. To achieve this goal, he is certified in breast ultrasound and stereotactic biopsy, thus providing breast patients with a minimally invasive biopsy procedure to determine diagnosis of breast abnormalities. Although a surgeon, Dr. Benowitz ultimately believes that the best surgery is no surgery at all, and patients should not be subjected to surgical procedures unless necessary. If unavoidable, he advocates for newer and less invasive procedures.
